Riverside County cutting ties with lobbyist tied to Rep. Lewis
Associated Press
RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Riverside County is ending its contract with a Washington, D.C. lobbying firm whose ties to local Republican Rep. Jerry Lewis are under federal investigation.
The county will let its month-to-month contract with Copeland, Lowery, Jacquez, Denton & White expire without renewal at the end of July, according to a letter sent Thursday. The letter was reported Saturday by The Press-Enterprise of Riverside.
"I don't think they're going to be effective while this investigation is going on," said Bob Buster, chairman of the Riverside County Board of Supervisors.
Two weeks ago, the firm split in two because of media scrutiny over the investigation by the U.S. attorney's office in Los Angeles. Investigators are looking at congressional "earmarking," where lawmakers insert spending for specific projects into legislation.
Lewis, who became chairman of the powerful House panel last year, has denied any wrongdoing and says he's proud of his efforts to win money for projects in his district.
Copeland Lowery has helped Riverside County and other clients - including other municipalities in Lewis' inland Southern California district - obtain earmarks in spending bills approved by the House Appropriations Committee, which Lewis chairs. Top Lewis aides have worked at Copeland Lowery, and the firm employs one of his close friends,%2
