Police Department writes 82 citations for illegal fireworks
The Fontana Police Department wrote 82 citations for illegal fireworks -- each costing $1,000 -- throughout the city during a sweep on Tuesday for the Independence Day holiday, police officials said.
In addition, one Fontana man injured his eyes when illegal fireworks blew up in his face, said Lt. Alan Hostetter of the Fontana P.D. No further information was available on the man's identity or condition.
The sweep started at 2 p.m. on Tuesday and went until midnight with 85 officers taking part, Hostetter said.
Officers confiscated more than 1,000 pounds of illegal fireworks, Hostetter said, which would fill the back of several pick-up trucks.
The confiscated fireworks will be destroyed by the San Bernardino County Fire Department.
Fire officials classify illegal fireworks as any that explode or leave the ground.
