Consumption rise drives up gas prices
10:00 PM PDT on Friday, July 7, 2006
Gas prices are going up because they were coming down, an auto club official said. Seven consecutive weeks of lower fuel prices spurred more consumption, said Carol Thorp, spokeswoman for the Automobile Club of Southern California, in a news release. The consumption increase triggered this week's 7-cent price increase to an average of more than $3.27 per gallon in the Inland Empire, Thorp said. Another reason for higher prices is the traditional summertime increase in travel, Thorp said. In the Southern California/Las Vegas region surveyed by the Automobile Club of Southern California, travelers to Las Vegas this weekend will find gas selling for the lowest average price, $2.96 per gallon, while visitors to Santa Barbara will pay the highest average price recorded, nearly $3.40 per gallon. Gasoline prices in Southern California and Las Vegas spiked to record highs in mid-May and had been declining until this week, Thorp said. Inland prices reached an average of $3.44 on May 15, Thorp said. This week's Inland region average price of $3.27 is 8 cents below June's average price and 80 cents higher than last year, Thorp said.
