Victoria Garden's Expansion Continues... (SB SUN June, 23, 2006)..

Victoria Gardens is nice, but if they intend to make it bigger as they are talking in this Story, then the rest of the Malls in the Inland Empire will be having a hard Time trying to compete, with the exception of when it is raining, but everyone knows it never rains in California, But Girl let me warn you, when it rains it pours, Man it pours!! LOL

That is what they are hoping for at the Gardens when the Summer months are upon us, and it is Averaging a Temperature of Oh, say 95-105 then it will not be to pleasant to go walking round the Gardens, and spend money. I guess that Ice Cream Shoppe will clean up.

We will see. I guess I am one that is old fashioned and like the pleasant Indoor shopping. Especially when it is warm or cold out.

Victoria Gardens' expansion continues

Within months, a ll the hubbub of construction taking place inside and around Victoria Gardens will yield additional reasons for the t he estimated 20 million annual visitors to return.

Since its October 2004 grand opening, 170 retail stores have moved into the Rancho Cucamonga shopping center. Now, developers are preparing to welcome a city cultural center, additional retail stores, more restaurants, and new town homes into the mix .

One of the most anticipated openings for the city is the cultural center, opening mid- August. City owned and operated, the center will consist of a full- service city branch library, the Lewis Family Playhouse and a banquet hall located west of the east parking structure.

" This center is the first of its kind in the nation, with it being connected to a library, theater and retail center," said Francie Palmer, community service marketing manager of Rancho Cucamonga. " We're excited to bring it to Southern California."

The center will cost $33.8 million to build, but no general city funds are being used. It has been funded private donations, a $7.8 million state library construction grant from 2000, and partnerships with developers, Palmer said. The full- size branch library will be located on the east side of the center and, when stocked, will double the number of library books in Rancho Cucamonga.

Deborah Clark, library director in Rancho Cucamonga, said she was excited for it to open. Of the 100,000 new items to be placed in the library, Clark estimated 80,000 would be new book titles. The remainder will consist of books and media.

A technology center is planned for the library, with computers, quiet rooms for reading, a " teen scene" area for group projects, a performing arts special collection and a children's lighthouse exterior Storytime Theatre with fiber optic constellations glittering on the ceiling.

" It's a place where story t ime will take place as well as where the theater performers can come and give presentations about what it's like to be an actor," Clark said.

In the middle of the cultural center, the Lewis Family Playhouse will showcase family- friendly shows performed Rancho Cucamonga's professional Main Street Theater Company and traveling professional theater companies. Palmer said the goal is to involve as many community members as possible, both behind and on the stage. " It's a great place for the community to enhance their skills in the world of theater," Palmer said.

Upcoming puppet shows will even be aimed to entertain even the youngest city residents. Palmer said preschool teachers will be able to bring students to the shows as part of their compliance with state school curriculum.

Depending on who is performing , ticket prices will vary from $7 to $50. The first show will be Sept. 8, and will feature Grammy-award winning musician Sheena Easton. Tickets are on sale and can be bought online at www.vgculturalcenter.com.

On the west side of the theater, a 300-person capacity banquet hall will be open for the public to rent. The hall comes with its own exclusive caterer Impressions Gourmet Catering. The price for renting the hall will depend on days, groups and hours, said Palmer, but the room will open for reservations June 1 for events this fall. Along with the city cultural center the restaurant T GI Friday's, and home furnishing store Crate & Barrel are scheduled to open in September.

" I really think ( Crate & Barrel) is going to make Victoria Gardens the concrete home furnishing destination," said Glenn Miller, director of marketing for Victoria Gardens.

In October, the apparel and furnishing store Anthropologie will open, and more fine dining options will be available for the holidays. Two more restaurants will open in December -- Gyu-Kaku, a Japanese BBQ, and Fleming's Prime Steakhouse & Wine Bar, known for its extensive wine list.

" It's a very elegant steakhouse," Miller said.

But retail stores, restaurants and entertainment are not the end of upcoming development. Although only a patch of dirt for the moment, in its place will be high-end town homes, scheduled to open early 2007.

Many of the other high-end town homes and apartments already surrounding Victoria Gardens are owned the Lewis Investment Company, which also partnered in building the shopping center " The rental market is very strong right now, particularly in that area," said Randall Lewis, executive vice president of Lewis Investment Company. " It's a great area because of all the access to shopping, trails, and great school systems."

Two communities are being built Shea Homes, " 24-seven" and " Three-65," and will offer three bedroom, three and a half bath town homes offering many amenities, including private decks and two-car garages -- all within walking distance of Victoria Gardens .

The city of Rancho Cucamonga plans to further expand the mall in the future. The final phase of the mall will include 5 levels of luxury condos built above the existing shops along both Main Streets. The surrounding surface level parking lots will be replaced with multiple 12 story mixed-use office/condo towers, parking structures, and a future 5 Star Luxury Hotel. The large piece of empty land in the northwest corner of the mall will be developed into a block resembling via rodeo that is attached to the new Rancho Cucamonga Nordstrom Department Store which will also be built on the site. The city also wants to add large water fountains, more lighting, and more landscaping to attract even more attention to the mall from the 15 Freeway. Pretty cool huh?
