FONTANA - The Police Department could send over a lieutenant to lead the Fontana Unified School District police department for one year.

The school board Wednesday approved the one-year contract that pays the lieutenant $205,700 in salary and benefits for the 2006-07 fiscal year.

Now the City Council will consider the issue at its Tuesday meeting.

The position combines the police chief and assistant chief positions into one and results in a cost savings of more than $30,000, said Cali Olsen-Binks, deputy superintendent of school support.

Board member Wayne Ruble opposed the contract because he said he was concerned about the cost of the position. The district, he said, is in deficit spending mode, referring to its recently approved budget.

"We need to look at saving money wherever we can," he said.

The position of Fontana school police chief has seen high turnover.

Its interim chief, Joseph McCann, left his post last week. In May, the board eliminated the assistant chief position.
