"It caught us by surprise," San Bernardino County Presiding Judge Larry Allen said Thursday. "She was a very strong, caring judge. It is a great loss." McPeters, who grew up in Fontana, apparently succumbed to cancer Wednesday, court officials said. She became a court commissioner in 1986 and was appointed a municipal court judge by Gov. George Deukmejian in 1990. She was elevated to Superior Court judge in 1990 and served in that role for the past 16 years. She was the county’s presiding judge from January 2000 to December 2001. Her most recent assignment was presiding over civil matters in the San Bernardino courthouse. Before that, she handled a criminal calendar in Fontana. San Bernardino County District Attorney Mike Ramos described McPeters’ death as "a great loss to the legal community." Ramos said he knew McPeters was sick, but didn’t grasp the seriousness of her illness. "I think she was trying to keep that personal," he said. "I didn’t know how serious it was until today when I heard she passed away." Allen said McPeters continued working until Tuesday. According to a profile of McPeters prepared by the San Bernardino County Bar Association, the judge had deep roots in the Inland Empire. She graduated from Fontana High School in 1958 and studied at Chaffey and San Bernardino community colleges. She received her law degree from the University of La Verne in 1977. She was a former president of the League of Women Voters and had campaigned for school board and district attorney. Services for McPeters are scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mountain View Cemetery in San Bernardino.
