A Gainesville police officer died on Wednesday after being hit by a car earlier this week.

Lt. Corey Dahlem was working after the University of Florida Gators win in the NCAA Championship Game, WESH 2 News reported.

Dahlem was working a roadblock near West University Avenue when investigators said Austin John Wright, 22, hit him. Wright was arrested for drunken driving and appeared before a judge on Wednesday. He had a blood-alcohol level of more than twice the legal limit, investigators said.

A bond of $500,000 was set for Wright during a court hearing on Wednesday morning at the Gainesville criminal courthouse, said Florida Highway Patrol Lt. Mike Burroughs.

Wright was charged with driving under the influence, serious bodily injury to another and failure to stop or remain at an accident involving injury.

Dahlem endured several surgeries at the University of Florida's Shands hospital, Lt. Keith Kameg said. He pased away around 2:50 p.m.

Dahlem served as a Gainesville police officer for more than 20 years.

Visitation will be held on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Trinity Methodist Church located at 4000 NW 53rd Avenue.

Dahlem's funeral service will be on Monday at 11 a.m. at Trinity Methodist Church.

Following the service, the burial will be held at Forest Meadows Cemetery at 4100 NW 39th Avenue.

In lieu of flowers, his family has requested donations be made to the Corey Dahlem Benevolent Fund at the 1st Credit Union of Gainesville at 412 E. University Avenue.
