READINGTON, N.J.-- A law enforcement source has told The Associated Press that an FBI agent who was shot Thursday in the parking lot of a Readington, New Jersey, home and garden center is dead. Police say the FBI agent was ambushed in the parking lot while doing surveillance of a crew of bank robbers.

Authorities say the shooting stemmed from a stakeout of the PNC Bank at 3510 Route 22 in the Whitehouse section of Readington just before 11:30 a.m.

The agent was reportedly tailing a crew of bank robbers when, as one law enforcement official put it, he was ambushed. A gunfight ensued in the parking lot of the Arvins Garden Center at 3535 Route 22, across the street from the bank.

He was rushed by helicopter to a nearby hospital in unknown condition. One source says he later died.

Two suspects were reportedly taken in custody at the scene by heavily armed law enforcement officials. Authorities were looking for a third, a man with a ski mask and two red bags.

They say the suspect has lost one shoe.

Police were searching for the suspect in the area of Readington, Branchburg and Bedminster.

They quickly surrounded the Quick Check convenience store at the intersection of Route 22 and Route 28 in Branchburg because of a report of one or more suspects were inside the building. The building was evacuated safely and it did not appear any suspects were found.

Police closed Route 22 in the vicinity for the search.

Authorities say the agent was part of a squad that had been investigating a crew of violent robbers who have pulled off a number of bank jobs in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties. Officials say there have been numerous bank robberies in the state, with other crews pulling copycat bank robberies.
